From Italian Charm to German Autobahns: An Epic Road Trip Adventure
Our 10-day Italian escapade had been a whirlwind of breathtaking scenery and delicious food. From the serene beauty of Lake Como to the romantic streets of Verona and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites, Italy had captivated us. But now, with a touch of bittersweetness, it was time to bid farewell and embark on a new adventure: a road trip through Austria and into Germany.
A Scenic Farewell to Italy: Lake Misurina and the Dolomites
Our final Italian breakfast was enjoyed with a stunning view of Lake Misurina, a picturesque alpine lake nestled amidst the Dolomites. Fuelled by pastries and the promise of adventure, we packed our bags and hit the road, anticipating a long but exciting drive ahead.
Little did we know, our journey wouldn't be without its hiccups. A stalled car near the lake added an unexpected delay to our departure, a humorous reminder of the unpredictable nature of travel.
Crossing Borders: A Whirlwind Through Austria
Our route took us through Austria, where a quick stop at the border for a vignette (toll sticker) provided an unexpected surprise: a motorway museum! This quirky pit stop added a touch of humor to our journey.
While we were saddened not to have more time to explore Austria's stunning alpine scenery, the glimpse of the majestic Alps was a treat in itself. The drive was a feast for the eyes, with towering mountains and lush valleys unfolding before us.
Germany Bound: Destination Neuschwanstein Castle
Crossing into Germany marked another milestone in our adventure. Our destination: the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle. We arrived in the charming village of Hohenschwangau, nestled at the foot of the castle, in the late afternoon. The village itself was a delight, even with most shops closing for the day.
After a brief exploration of Hohenschwangau, including a humorous encounter with a "no swimming" sign, we settled in for the night, eager to explore the iconic castle the following day.
Autobahn Adventures and a McDonald's Detour
The final leg of our journey to Stuttgart was marked by heavy traffic, testing our patience. A chocolate bar, intended as a sweet treat, melted into a liquid mess in the summer heat, highlighting the struggles of car air conditioning on a long road trip.
Hunger and late-night driving led us to a McDonald's, a rare fast-food indulgence. While we typically prioritize local cuisine, sometimes practicality trumps preference.
Exploring Stuttgart: Parks, Museums, and Sausages
Finally arriving in Stuttgart, we were eager to explore this vibrant city. Our first stop was the oldest park in Stuttgart, a green oasis offering a tranquil escape from the urban bustle. From there, we embarked on a hike through the city center, marveling at the beautiful parks and green spaces.
Our culinary desires were finally satisfied with a mountain of delicious German sausages, a quintessential German experience.
The highlight of our Stuttgart visit was the Mercedes-Benz Museum, a fascinating journey through automotive history and a reflection of Germany's industrial and cultural evolution.

From the Italian lakes to the German autobahns, our road trip was a mix of breathtaking scenery, unexpected challenges, and unforgettable experiences.
